Public Procurement Promoting Innovation

Public Procurement Promoting Innovation (PPPI, German: IÖB) is a key instrument of demand-side innovation policy in Austria. It is designed to bring innovations into practice through procurement activities by public enterprises and institutions.
The goal is to increase the impact of climate and environment-related technologies through public demand for innovation, thereby addressing major societal challenges. To this end, Austria‘s annual public procurement volume of around 70 billion EUR is to be used to purchase innovative products and services, supporting their development in the process.
The public sector is taking the lead by acting as a reference customer for new technologies and fostering innovative solutions in the public sector. Austria is already one of the most progressive countries in Europe when it comes to public procurement of innovation. This trend is to be continued so that everyone can benefit: citizens, businesses, and public administration.
