Austria develops logistics site strategy Federal Minister Hanke: "Austria's logistics must also achieve top performances in the coming decades"
Logistics encompasses all upstream and downstream processes along the value chain, thus forming the backbone of a functioning economy. The business location Austria in the heart of Europe is to be specifically strengthened with a new logistics site strategy (LSS).
Austria's logistics has been accustomed to achieving top performances for decades. In view of current geopolitical developments, the sector is adjusting its strategic alignment to respond to the most pressing requirements of the times.
Three central challenges are in focus
- the pronounced shortage of skilled labour,
- the profound technological transformation through the application of artificial intelligence, as well as
- the increasing importance of sustainability in terms of ESG criteria.
"As a country in the heart of Europe, we have a special key role in the value chain. Especially against the backdrop of geopolitical developments, Austria's logistics must also achieve top performances in the coming decades. The new logistics strategy is intended to contribute to this," emphasises Federal Minister Peter Hanke.
Ten thematic fields as a foundation
The logistics site strategy is based on ten clearly defined thematic fields that form the core of this strategy. They cover a broad spectrum – from training, digitalisation over innovation to value creation and safety. This ensures that the strategy not only examines individual aspects but covers the entire logistics sector in its diversity.
Broad participation and involvement process
The logistics site strategy is being developed by the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) together with experts, the social partner organisations and representatives from business and industry. The process starts with broad involvement of the logistics sector. Companies, associations and experts can submit proposals that are then reviewed and further developed by an accompanying committee. The participatory approach guarantees comprehensibility, strengthens the involvement of all stakeholders and keeps the strategy realistic.
Implementation from June 2026
Following the official presentation in June 2026, the implementation process of the logistics site strategy will commence. The previously defined measures will be realised step by step by the BMIMI together with the logistics industry. The goal is a strategy that strengthens Austria and makes the location sustainably competitive. Together we want to actively shape, enable purposefully and positively change logistics.
