300,000 electric cars on Austrian roads: E-mobility reaches new milestone Mobility Minister Hanke: "300,000 electric cars demonstrate: E-mobility has arrived in Austria" – July brings a new registration record with 27.4 percent electric share

E-mobility in Austria reaches another important milestone: In July 2026, for the first time, more than 300,000 pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were on Austrian roads. Specifically, the estimated stock at the end of July was 304,328 electric cars. At the same time, the dynamic increase in new registrations continues: In July, 27.39 percent of all newly registered cars were purely electric, a total of 7,073 electric cars were newly registered in July.

"300,000 electric cars on Austrian roads send a strong signal: E-mobility has reached the centre of society. It is particularly gratifying that we are simultaneously seeing a record in new registrations. More and more people are choosing an electric car because the offering is growing, the technology is more mature, and the charging infrastructure is continuously expanding. We will continue this path with eMOVE Austria," said Mobility Minister Peter Hanke.

300,000 electric cars reached in significantly shorter time

A look at the development of recent years clearly shows the increasing momentum: The mark of 100,000 battery electric cars was reached in Austria in September 2022. Subsequently, it took 27 months for the next 100,000 vehicles. On the other hand, the leap from 200,000 to 300,000 electric cars only required around 19 months. Thus, the ramp-up of e-mobility is accelerating significantly. In some federal states, the share of electric cars in new registrations is now even over 30 percent.

Parallel to the increasing number of electric vehicles, the public charging infrastructure is also being continuously expanded. In July, 676 new public charging points were added. Since the beginning of 2026, a total of 3,817 new charging points have been established. Austria now has approximately 39,500 public charging points. The mark of 40,000 public charging points is expected to be reached by summer.

"The ramp-up of e-mobility works particularly well where vehicle offerings and infrastructure play hand-in-hand. Hence, we are focusing with eMOVE Austria on further expanding the charging infrastructure. Our goal is clear: E-mobility should be simple, practical, and reliable for people – regardless of whether they live in the city or the countryside," emphasised Hanke.

eMOVE Austria: Focus on infrastructure and information

With the programme eMOVE Austria, the Mobility Ministry consolidates the measures to promote e-mobility. A central focus is on expanding the public charging infrastructure, especially fast-charging facilities. A revision of the Federal Roads Act is currently accelerating the expansion of charging infrastructure on motorways and expressways. At the same time, the provision of information and awareness-raising is intended to help reduce existing reservations about e-mobility.
