Milestone for eMOVE Austria: 1,000 heavy electric trucks approved Mobility Minister Peter Hanke: “E-mobility in heavy transport already a reality”

In June 2026, another significant milestone in e-mobility was reached in Austria: for the first time, 1,000 heavy electric trucks (vehicle classes N2, N3, and articulated lorries) were approved. This development impressively underscores the dynamics of electrification in freight transport. While at the beginning of 2021, only 47 heavy electric trucks were on Austria's roads, their number increased to 314 by the end of 2024, already reaching 705 by the end of 2025, and now for the first time crosses the mark of 1,000.

Mobility Minister Peter Hanke: “The 1,000th approved heavy electric truck is clear evidence that electromobility in heavy transport is no longer a future vision, but is already a lived reality today. In recent months, I have visited numerous companies that are gradually converting their fleets to battery-electric commercial vehicles. Feedback from practice is exceptionally positive. With our eMOVE Austria programme, we will continue to consistently pursue the path towards e-mobility in all areas – through funding, legislative ease, and awareness-raising measures.”

A significant contributor to reaching this milestone has been the strong increase in new registrations: In 2025, the proportion of newly registered electric trucks quadrupled compared to the previous year. Although some European countries – such as the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, or Switzerland – still show higher values in terms of shares of emission-free truck new registrations, Austria is also sending a strong signal for the transformation of freight transport at the European level by reaching 1,000 heavy electric trucks. This development is primarily driven by companies increasingly converting their fleets to electric drives not only for climate protection reasons, but also due to economic and strategic advantages.

E-mobility in Austria is gaining more momentum

Even in the e-car sector, June 2026 was an absolute record month. With nearly 9,000 vehicles, more purely battery-powered cars were newly registered in one month than ever before. The share of new registrations was 26.3 percent, also reaching a new record. In the three federal states of Upper Austria, Burgenland, and Vorarlberg, the share of e-cars in new registrations was even over 30 percent. A further milestone is expected in July with a total of over 300,000 battery-powered e-cars in Austria.

“No E-fear anymore!”

The federal government's first e-mobility campaign entitled “No E-fear anymore” started in June and is now fully underway. With amusing plush puppets, the Ministry of Mobility promotes the reduction of reservations about e-mobility, including fears about low ranges or poor charging infrastructure.
