Österreich radelt (Austria on Foot): Step Challenge circles the Earth 14 times 700 million steps in Austria and 4.8 billion steps worldwide make a strong statement for active mobility

The "Austria on Foot" initiative is impressively continuing its success story. On the occasion of the national Day of Walking, a nationwide step challenge was implemented for the first time this year. The original expectations were far exceeded: Instead of the targeted 100 million steps, nearly 700 million steps were collected, equivalent to about 14 circumnavigations of the Earth.

"Thanks to the strong support of all Austrian transport associations and the ÖBB, the challenge has unfolded an impressive dynamic. Instead of the originally planned 100 million steps, nearly 700 million steps were collected," emphasises Mobility Minister Peter Hanke. "This result impressively shows how great the enthusiasm for walking is. At the same time, it becomes clear what an important contribution even short journeys in everyday life make to health, quality of life, and sustainable mobility."

Broad participation and international dynamics

What began in spring 2025 with the introduction of the national "Day of Walking" has developed into a broad movement in a short time. The initiative of the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure invited municipalities, associations, companies, and universities to actively participate and received exceptional resonance.

On 27 April 2026, the Day of Walking was not only celebrated in Austria but also globally as part of the first "International Walking Day." Walking, as a central, everyday form of mobility, was the international focus. In addition to numerous activities and events, a global step challenge was also conducted, motivating people from 67 countries to move together. A total of 4.8 billion steps were taken – equivalent to around 96 circumnavigations of the Earth, underscoring the worldwide reach and commitment of the participants.

"Austria on Foot" will use this momentum to further sustainably strengthen walking in everyday life. Walking is not only healthy and environmentally friendly but can also be optimally combined with public transport.

The next impulse will follow from 9 to 11 September at the Bicycle and Pedestrian Traffic Summit in Eisenstadt. Several hundred experts from politics, administration, business, and science from home and abroad are expected to set new impulses for active mobility. Tickets for the summit are available at a discounted early bird rate until the end of June.
