Constructive infrastructure exchange with Federal Minister Hanke regarding central Styrian traffic projects Railway and road infrastructure were discussed jointly
During a constructive infrastructure exchange in Vienna, Federal Minister Peter Hanke, Governor Mario Kunasek, Transport Regional Councillor Claudia Holzer, and Regional Councillor Simone Schmiedtbauer, who represented Deputy Governor Manuela Khom, discussed central transport and infrastructure projects of Styria.
The exchange focused on current projects in the railway and road sectors, as well as further cooperation between federal, state, and the responsible infrastructure partners.
It was discussed that the State of Styria would explore possibilities for financial involvement in enhancing and sustaining the Thermenbahn. This will subsequently serve as a foundation for a possible relevant declaration of intent.
Significant projects within the high-level road network were also addressed. These include the S36 between Judenburg and St. Georgen, the third lane on the A9 between Graz-West and Wildon, as well as the A2 motorway connection at Hart near Graz.
Furthermore, the general renovation of the Graz Plabutsch tunnel, necessary from 2032 onwards, was also a topic of discussion. Possible impacts on traffic, commuters, and the economic location of Graz were considered. Additionally, the demand for an additional tunnel tube was discussed.
"I understand the public's desire for optimal connectivity to the city while ensuring the lowest possible traffic burdens for residents during the crucial mandatory refurbishment works on the tunnel. Therefore, I have instructed ASFINAG to develop a facts check on the discussed third tunnel tube," asserted Federal Minister Peter Hanke.
It was agreed that ASFINAG will carry out a thorough facts check by September. Once the evaluation is complete, the results will be presented in another meeting by ASFINAG.
All interlocutors emphasized the constructive exchange and the shared goal to sustainably and future-oriented develop the transport infrastructure in Styria.
