Since 16 September 2026, Rupert Pichler was appointed on an interim basis to head the Directorate General "Innovation and Technology".

Pichler is the head of the Department of Research and Technology Promotion and previously served as deputy section head. Margit Mischkulnig, head of the Department of Space Affairs and Aviation Technologies, is serving as interim deputy head.
