Approximately 1.085 billion euros for Vorarlberg Mobility package strengthens rail, road and innovation

Comprehensive infrastructure investments secure mobility, economy and quality of life in the west of Austria.

With an investment volume of approximately 1.085 billion euros by 2031, the federal government along with the two infrastructure companies ÖBB and ASFINAG are setting a strong signal for modern, efficient and future-ready mobility in Vorarlberg. At a press conference at the ÖBB Container Cargo Terminal in Wolfurt, Mobility Minister Peter Hanke together with Governor Markus Wallner, ÖBB-CEO Andreas Matthä as well as ASFINAG Board Director Hartwig Hufnagl presented the central points of the infrastructure program. The investments reach the people and businesses in the region directly - and strengthen Vorarlberg as an economic, logistics and living space location in the heart of Europe. In 2026, ÖBB and ASFINAG are investing a total of 172 million euros in infrastructure projects in Vorarlberg.

Mobility Minister Peter Hanke: „Vorarlberg is one of the most dynamic economic areas in Austria - and is located on one of the most important transport routes in Europe. With these investments in rail, road, and smart infrastructure, we create better connections for the people, strengthen the domestic economy and focus on intelligent traffic flow management. Modern mobility means thinking of all transport carriers together - and that's exactly what we're doing here in Vorarlberg.”

Modern infrastructure for the west of Austria

Vorarlberg is a hub in the tri-border area between Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and at the same time home to export-oriented industrial enterprises of international standing. A powerful infrastructure is a prerequisite to meet the high requirements for mobility, logistics, security, and sustainability. The mobility package pursues an integrated approach: Targeted investments in public transport, the modernization of the road network, and intelligent traffic management create better mobility, less traffic congestion, and relieve neighboring communities noticeably.

Governor Markus Wallner: „A powerful and connected mobility secures the economic location Vorarlberg on one hand. On the other hand, it is also the foundation of the attraction of our region and the prosperity of our population," emphasizes Governor Wallner. "To ensure this mobility optimally, an integral traffic policy is required that relies on a powerful infrastructure and sustainable concepts in passenger and freight transport. This includes, in the medium term, road construction projects such as an expansion of the motorway junction Wolfurt-Lauterach and the S 18."

Focus on rail: capacity, comfort, and freight logistics

ÖBB will continue its modernization campaign in Vorarlberg in 2026 with targeted measures - from optimizing central stations to massive capacity increases in freight transport. ÖBB will invest a total of 80 million euros in 2026, by 2030 it will be 530 million.

ÖBB-CEO Andreas Matthä: „Investments in rail ensure an improvement of public transport throughout the country and strengthen the economic and tourism location. A modern and functional infrastructure is the foundation of our quality of life and our prosperity.”

Cargo terminal Wolfurt: The logistics heart of the west

The Container Cargo Terminal (CCT) Wolfurt is the central freight transport hub for the Vorarlberg economy. In 2026 the technical implementation for the remote-controlled operation of the cranes is starting, a third portal crane has already been ordered. In the final expansion, the capacity will be increased by 76 percent to 454,000 tonnes per year - a clear commitment to shifting freight transport to environmentally friendly rail and strengthening domestic industrial enterprises.

Bregenz Harbour Station: Modernisation on Lake Constance

With around 4,000 passengers daily, Bregenz Harbour is one of the most frequently used stations in the country. The extension of the platform to 220 metres creates the basis for longer trains and more capacity. A new spacious underpass with lift system increases safety and comfort for pedestrians and cyclists - and eliminates waiting times before closed railway gates. The selected solution specifically preserves the valuable local recreation areas on the Lake Constance shore.

Line modernization Feldkirch–Buchs and new station Feldkirch-Tosters

A comprehensive line and bridge renovation on the section Feldkirch–Buchs will bring a new station Feldkirch-Tosters into operation from October 2026 - with optimal connectivity to the Feldkirch State Hospital.

Double-track expansion Klosterbogen / Bludenz

The completion of the EIA procedure for the double-track expansion of the eastern entrance to Bludenz Station is expected in the spring. Construction is planned to start at the turn of the year. Through the extended crossing area, schedule stability on the entire Arlberg axis is significantly improved.

Götzis station and further modernisations

Plans for the reconstruction of Götzis station will be submitted to the railway authority this year. Wolfurt stations and the station of Klaus will be completed this year. Planning is already underway for the Frastanz and Nenzing stations in the Walgau.

Intelligent road infrastructure: safety, modernisation, and quality of life

ASFINAG is investing around 555 million euros in the Vorarlberg motorway network by 2031 - with a clear focus on safety, renovation of the existing structure, and relieving residents.

ASFINAG Board Director Hartwig Hufnagl: „As a mobility provider, we are aware that the Lake Constance region is a highly networked, economically strong area. Performance, safety, and sustainability of our infrastructure are therefore at the centre of our work. We are investing 92 million euros this year and more than half a billion euros by 2031.”

In 2027, investments will rise to 111 million euros.

Pfänder Tunnel: State-of-the-art safety technology

Since March 2025, renovation works have been underway on the operating and safety technology in the Pfänder Tunnel. Lighting, traffic control facilities, fire alarm system as well as acoustic tunnel monitoring will be completely renewed. Traffic release is planned for October 2026. The work is mainly carried out at night, so that disruptions to day traffic are minimised.

First ASFINAG rest area in Vorarlberg: Walgau-South

Since 2 March, construction work for the first ASFINAG rest area in Vorarlberg is underway. In Walgau-South, 39 truck parking spaces, 23 car parking spaces, a multifunctional strip for caravans and buses, modern sanitary facilities as well as seating areas, a playground, and - as at all ASFINAG rest areas - a drinking water fountain are being created. Completion is planned for March 2027.

Noise protection: 28 million euros for Vorarlberg's residents

More than 28 million euros will be invested in comprehensive noise protection measures along the A 14 by 2031. Frastanz and Göfis will already receive more noise protection in 2026 and 2027. City Tunnel, Weidach and Wolfurt will follow in 2028, Schlins, Nenzing and Bludesch in 2029.

S 18 Lake Constance expressway: intensive planning

The largest road project in western Austria is in an intense planning phase. After submission of the preliminary project in 2025, ASFINAG is working tirelessly on the foundation surveys for the EIA submission project. Due to the complexity and the required coordination with the state of Vorarlberg, the Swiss authority ASTRA, and the location municipalities, a processing duration of three years is expected.

Traffic monitoring points and telematics for the A 14

From the current perspective and subject to all procedures, the long-planned traffic monitoring points in Wolfurt and Lauterach will be implemented in 2028. At the same time, a telematic facility for the harmonization of traffic on the A 14 will be installed in the heart of Vorarlberg - for more safety and better traffic flow.

Background: Investments as a driver for the economy and employment

The investments by ÖBB and ASFINAG not only strengthen the infrastructure but have a direct impact on the regional economy: construction industry, planning offices, suppliers, and technology companies benefit from the orders. Every euro invested in public infrastructure creates domestic value and secures jobs – a central element of Mobility Minister Hanke's investment approach, which focuses on investing out of the crisis.
