eMove Austria awarded as a UN project: Austria sets benchmarks for sustainable mobility worldwide Hanke sees "great accolade for Austria" - E-mobility programme becomes part of the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport (2026–2035)

The United Nations (UN) officially launched the Decade for Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) in New York. The aim of the UN initiative within the framework of the 2030 Agenda is to promote sustainable, affordable and climate-friendly mobility worldwide.

With the "eMove Austria" programme, a central Austrian flagship project has now been recognised as an official contribution to the UN Decade – a strong international signal for the quality and impact of Austrian mobility policy.

Mobility Minister Peter Hanke emphasises the importance of this international recognition: "That eMove Austria is named as a project of the UN Decade for Sustainable Transport is a great accolade for Austria. It shows that our approach to the mobility transition, namely pragmatic, socially balanced and targeted, is convincing internationally. We prove that climate protection, economic strength and practical mobility are no contradiction and thereby offer both people and the automotive industry the necessary planning and investment security."

The UN Decade is based on Resolution A/78/148 "Strengthening the connections between all modes of transport to achieve the goals for sustainable development". Member states were called upon to bring concrete, effective initiatives. Austria is following this call with ambitious and practical measures. First and foremost with eMove Austria, the comprehensive programme to promote emission-free mobility.

United Nations recognition for Austria's rapid charging expansion

The naming of eMove Austria as a project of the UN Decade underscores the international model effect of the Austrian approach: instead of individual measures, Austria relies on an integrated overall programme that bundles charging infrastructure, vehicles, research, market incentives and regulatory framework conditions under a common umbrella brand. In doing so, eMove Austria not only makes a significant contribution to the mobility transition but also serves as a model for other countries worldwide.

eMove Austria: concrete contribution to global sustainability goals

eMove Austria brings together all central measures for e-mobility in Austria and sets clear priorities in expanding the charging infrastructure. In cities as well as in rural regions, rapid charging infrastructure is to be massively expanded. Thus, the programme addresses one of the central challenges of the global transport transformation: the comprehensive, equitable access to clean mobility.

For the years 2025 and 2026, Austria is providing nearly half a billion euros for the co-financing of e-buses, commercial vehicles, electric motorcycles, and charging infrastructure. Eligible for funding are private individuals, companies, NGOs as well as municipalities and regions. Through strategic location planning, close collaboration with regional actors and ongoing analysis of network coverage, a sustainable and efficient implementation is ensured.

Austria as a reliable partner of the UN

With eMove Austria, Austria also underscores its role as a committed partner of the United Nations. In particular, countries with special geographical or economic challenges, such as Central Asian landlocked developing states, can benefit from Austrian experiences.

Hanke concluding: "The UN Decade is an invitation to collaborate. With eMove Austria, we not only contribute a strong national programme but also our expertise. Sustainable transport is key to achieving global development goals, and Austria takes on this responsibility."
