925 times around the Earth: "Österreich radelt" convinces more and more people to get on their bikes Almost 44,000 participating cyclists and 37 million kilometres covered in one season show: The mobility shift is well underway.
On Monday, 17 November, Mobility Minister Peter Hanke together with the chairman of the WKO sporting goods trade Michael Nendwich and woom CEO Bernd Hake honoured the national winners of "Österreich radelt" 2025 in the banquet hall of the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure. "Cycling – even with e-bikes – reduces the risk of heart attacks by up to 40 percent," outlined Federal Minister Hanke the immense health potential* of campaigns like "Österreich radelt".
The list of participants reads like a cross-section of the country:
- 664 municipalities,
- 842 clubs,
- 1,248 companies,
- 113 schools and
- 38 universities
from all provinces took part this year in "Österreich radelt". The principle is incredibly simple: every ride on a bicycle is recorded via app or website, and the kilometres are compared in a friendly competition.
Where active mobility is practised
"Cycling is an essential component of modern mobility," said Federal Minister Hanke, who personally awarded the winners. "The many dedicated people in municipalities, companies, educational institutions and clubs show that active mobility is not just a goal, but has long been practised."
For seven years, "Österreich radelt" has motivated people in all provinces to use their bicycles regularly – whether on the way to work, to school or in leisure time. Those who participate have the chance to win e-bikes, hotel vouchers or bicycle accessories. The incentive helps. But:
"The 37 million kilometres – equivalent to 925 circumnavigations of the Earth – show: The actual gain is something else: Those who pedal daily, stay fit and do something good for body and mind," says Federal Minister Hanke.
Vorarlberg sweeps with 17 wins
The region is again leading the rankings as last year. 17 out of 51 national victories go to Vorarlberg. Tyrol and Lower Austria follow with seven wins each, Upper Austria, Burgenland and Carinthia with six wins each. A newcomer from Salzburg and an Austria-wide company complete the list of winners. In the municipal category with 5,000 to 15,000 inhabitants Höchst maintained its national victory from last year. Mayor Stefan Übelhör sets an example and cycles to work daily.
"In Vorarlberg, cycling is part of everyday life. But as Mayor of Höchst shows: Infrastructure alone is not enough. It takes people who lead by example," says Federal Minister Hanke.
From fair-weather to all-year cyclists
That cycling is not just a fair-weather event is demonstrated by the participants of "Winter Radeln". Until 11 February 2026, all those who want to remain active in the cold season can participate. Those who pedal even at sub-zero temperatures can win thermal vouchers and winter-proof accessories.
Between March and September, formats such as "Österreich radelt zur Arbeit", the "Mayor Challenge" or "Summer Cycling" provide additional motivation. "Österreich radelt" starts again at the beginning of spring on 20 March 2026. Interested companies, municipalities, clubs and educational institutions can enroll anytime at radelt.at/veranstalter.
About Österreich radelt
