Federal government decides on truck toll package and switch to digital vignette 2027 Mobility Minister Hanke: “Switch to digital vignette is the next step towards user-friendliness”
The federal government has decided in today's Council of Ministers on the already announced truck toll package and the switch to the digital vignette from 2027 onwards.
While the toll package sends an important signal for more cost transparency and planning security in the transport industry, the digital vignette represents the next step towards more user-friendliness and modern mobility.
Mobility Minister Peter Hanke emphasizes: “With today's decision, we are achieving two major advances at once: We are ensuring more cost transparency in road traffic and at the same time supporting the transport industry in transitioning to emission-free trucks. In addition, the switch to the digital vignette is the next step towards greater user-friendliness. We are making everyday life for millions of drivers simpler, more modern and more sustainable, without restricting analogue access options. In this way, we are making mobility progressively future-proof – for the economy, the environment, and people alike.”
Digital vignette from 2027: Step into the future
From 2027, the adhesive vignette will be finally replaced by the digital vignette. This means less effort for users, more comfort and a modern, sustainable approach. Already, over 75 percent of annual vignettes are digital, and for short-term vignettes, the share is over 50 percent. For the year 2026, everything remains as usual: Both adhesive vignette and digital vignette retain their validity. The price is 106.80 euros, adjusted by 2.9 percent according to the consumer price index.
Until the complete switch in 2027, ASFINAG will further expand the distribution network – digital vignettes can continue to be purchased in newsagents, petrol stations, toll stations, at ARBÖ, ÖAMTC and other partners. Thus, analogue access remains assured. With the digital vignette, everyone benefits from numerous advantages: no tedious scraping off, subscription options, reminder service, and easy use with interchangeable plates.
More cost transparency and planning security for the transport industry
The truck toll package improves transparency and planning security regarding road traffic costs. In future, external costs for air pollution, noise, and CO₂ emissions will be taken into account more significantly – amounting to approximately an additional 42 million euros annually. This reinforces the ecological monitoring effect and ensures the long-term financing of road infrastructure. The federal government's goal remains to advance the shift of goods from road to rail.
To relieve the transport industry in challenging times, the valorisation of infrastructure costs for the year 2026 will be suspended once – however, the CO₂ monitoring effect remains fully intact. Furthermore, the discount policy for emission-free trucks, established until 2030 (currently 75 percent), ensures investment security for companies switching to climate-friendly fleets. The Ministry of Mobility supports this transition this year with around 80 million euros within the framework of the e-Mobility programme eMove Austria.
