European Mobility Week: EU Commissioner and Federal Minister visit Event in Innsbruck Together for affordable, safe and inclusive mobility – EU and Austria make a strong statement in Innsbruck

EU Transport and Tourism Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Mobility Minister Peter Hanke made a strong statement for climate-friendly mobility. As part of the European Mobility Week (EMW), they made it clear that sustainable mobility is a central task for the entire European Union and Austria - affordable, inclusive, and accessible to everyone.

Together with pupils, the two politicians and the managing director of Verkehrsverbund Tirol participated in a MOVE workshop, an innovative format that prepares children and young people for the independent use of public transport. The workshop, attended by students of Innsbruck Elementary School on the occasion of the EMW, was enabled by Verkehrsverbund Tirol (VVT), Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe (IVB) and ÖBB and conducted by Klimabündnis Tirol.

EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasised the European dimension in his statement: “The European Mobility Week shows how closely European cooperation and regional initiatives intertwine. Across Europe, cities, communities, companies, and educational institutions are setting impulses for climate-friendly mobility - from innovative school project days to testing new transport solutions. This joint commitment makes it clear: Sustainable mobility is not a promise for the future, but a reality today, supported by the strength of our European community.”

This year, the EMW is under the motto “Mobility for all” – highlighting the social dimension: How can transport systems be designed to be accessible, safe, and affordable for all – irrespective of age, background, income, or place of residence?

Federal Minister Peter Hanke subsequently emphasised the connection between climate protection and social justice: “When we combine climate protection and social justice, mobility that is attractive for all people emerges. During the European Mobility Week municipalities in Austria and throughout the EU are sending a strong signal in this direction. We thank all partners who have once again worked hard for a diverse and successful Mobility Week this year.”
