Semiconductors have long been an integral part of our everyday lives. Whether in communication, such as smartphones, tablets and computers, medicine, increasing energy efficiency or transport, for example in driver assistance systems, this technology plays a crucial role.

‘Semiconductors offer immense growth opportunities, especially for Austria. Demand is constantly rising, and according to a survey by the European Commission, demand for microchips could double by 2030 alone. Austria is in a good starting position here, as our country has established itself as a major player in recent years,’ explains Innovation Minister Peter Hanke.

To further strengthen Austria's position, Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) is one of 12 European partners involved in setting up an ‘EU chip design platform’. The stated goal is to support innovation in the field of semiconductor technologies by giving SMEs and start-ups without their own manufacturing facilities access to training opportunities, capital and modern chip design resources.

In the government programme, we have set ourselves the goal of developing an industrial strategy by the end of 2025 that will bring Austria back to the forefront. For me, one thing is certain: Austria's competitiveness as an industrial location is the result of its strength as a location for innovation. That is why we are deliberately focusing on promoting key technologies such as the semiconductor industry. With Silicon Austria Labs, Austria has a cutting-edge research centre with a high level of expertise and the ability to secure our position as a key nation in the European semiconductor scene in the long term," said Hanke.
